GKU D600 Dashcam
As any owner is aware, we are basically invisible on the road, even in firecracker yellow with the LED dipped beams on at al times. People just don't see us coming, we're too low on the road.
That's why a dashcam is on my must-have list. One day it could end poorly in spite of the cautious anticipation of everything happening around me. And if it happens, I want it recorded on video. - But I don't feel that is needed on our regular everyday family cars.
Amazon (what a surprise), led me to the GKU D600 dashcam kit. It consists of a front 4K/2.5K headless unit with the SD card, and a wired remote 1080p rear camera. I have added a hardwired power supply kit as well.
All is controlled via a smartphone app using WiFi.
The main unit is sticked to the windscreen, hidden below the rearview mirror. I've routed the 2 cables around the black frame using black electric tape. Not subtle at all but it works fine and nobody has ever really noticed the cameras or the quick and dirty job.
The rear camera is fitted to the left central post of the roll bar with the help of a custom 3D-printed bracket. Here again the wire is routed around the roll bar with strips of black tape. The cable then goes across the car following the top of the panel behind the seats, then along the tunnel to the dashboard.
Power for the hardwired power supply is taken from the back of the 12V outlet (ground and permanent +12V). The "accessory" +12V is taken from the indicator light of the heated windscreen switch, it was the most obvious and visible way to get power when the ignition is on.
It's configured to loop continuously in 1 minute chunks when driving, and store time-lapse (1 fps) surveillance video when parked in 15 minutes files for 24 hours before shutting down completely.
Nobody ever notices it, it blends fine with the windscreen and roll bar.
Neither of the cameras is rated to be water resistant, but I've had no issues with mines in spite of the numerous times they've been under pouring rain, especially for the rear unit as the front is somewhat protected by the windscreen.
